How to get rid of fleas?

Ask: I have an indoor cat that I've had for about a year now, and a dog that is mainly outdoor but comes inside during the evenings. Our dog gets regular baths and flea treatments, and because our cat is indoor the vet told us we didn't need to treat our cat for fleas as long as our dog was.

A couple days ago I noticed my bed was covered in fleas, along with our couches and such. I washed all of our pillows, bedding, rugs, ect. I also vaccumed the entire house. I've been trying everything but I'm still getting fleas everywhere! I treated our couches chairs with baking soda as someone suggested to me, but saw no difference. So I bought flea spray and treated the house.

Got a flea spray for my cat and treated him along with an apple cider vinegar rise and combed him after. Also used a topical flea treatment on our cat. Gave our dog a bath and vinegar rise, along with her normal flea treatment. But I'm still finding fleas.

I just sprayed a duvet I just washed and it was covered in fleas after my cat was laying on it! It seems like none of the treatments I'm doing are working? I even tried the dish with the soap and water with a light over it to catch fleas but I'm not getting anything. Please help! I haven't been able to sleep for days.

Anna: You need to go to your vet and get some topical flea treatment like you use on the dog that is formulated for cats. This type of product kills fleas that get on the cat. If you have carpet or upholstered furniture you need to do more than spray.

You need to get some bug bombs or powder to treat the furniture and carpet and then vacuum thoroughly. You will probably have to do this more than once as it sounds like you have gotten an infestation.

What happened is that some living fleas were hitching a ride inside on the dog and then jumping ship to the cat. I have inside cats and outside dogs as well and have always treated the cats. FYI, it actually will help if you keep your yard sprayed in the spring, summer, and fall as well.

John M: Fleas are almost impossible to get rid of. You need a topical treatment for the cat and the dog. Fleas can live in the carpet and your vacuum cleaner and still survive.

I use Advantage ll for cats and the fleas are no longer on my cat and it kills the eggs they lay. I also set up flea traps to get the ones on the floor and it drew them in like a magnet. Into the 3rd month they finally stopped showing up.

Bob: The vet who told you that deserves to be retrained. It's utter nonsense.

You need to do two things:

1. You need a proper household flea spray (probably several cans). Spray all round the house and into every nook and cranny. I think the vet might be the best source for the cans. My experience of stuff you buy in supermarkets is that it's patchy.

2. I suggest you treat your cat (and maybe your dog) with Program, which you can get from the vet. You can either put it in the cat's food, or the vet can inject it every 3 months. This is brilliant stuff, and it will solve the flea problem completely.
