My dog got my neighbors dog pregnant. Now she's trying to make me pay for all of the vet bills, and anything else that comes with it.?

Ask: Now unlike my dog my neighbors dog is a complete escaped artist. She digs under fences and scales the gates that are around our yards. It seems like it's impossible to keep that dog contained, and more than enough times she ends up in my yard.

Apparently her dog is some quality breed poddle and won some campion ships, and my dog is a mutt. Which he is but I have no problem with that. Her dog went into heat and climbed the fence and got in MY backyard with my dog while he was outback.

I usually be outside with him, but that particular day I had to multitask a couple of things, and only came out after the knotting. Well she wants me to pay for any vet bills that she has, and if anything happens I'm going to reimburse her with whatever she paid for the dog.

I don't think I should be held responsible for her dog getting out? Do I have to pay her anything? Because it's likely that my dog isn't the only one that got to her dog.

Keith:
I'm a veterinarian that has previously worked with animal control. There is nothing that she can do, its her responsibility to make sure her dog doesn't stray, not yours to keep her dog out.

If she tries, insist on DNA testing of ALL (not just one, more than one male can sire a litter) the puppies and make her prove that your dog is the father of ALL the puppies, at her expense.

At 38 dollars a sample she probably won't even try. She also has to prove proximate cause (That an action or inaction that was negligent on your part) to be able to sue.

That being said, it would be wise to keep an eye for when her dog or any other dog is in heat, and keep a close eye on your dog in the future, just to prevent future unwanted puppies.

Ocimom:
You do not owe her anything. She is 95% at fault for allowing her dog in heat to escape when outside. Any one with a brain knows you never let a female in heat outside for even 5 mins without a leash on and supervision.

But you are 5% at fault for not having your male dog (especially since he's a mutt) neutered. I'd have your dog neutered asap.

Yes her dog may have bred with other males too but you did witness them tying. She would need to run a DNA test on every puppy to determine how many were sired by your dog, but technically you don't owe her a dime

Bluebonnet:
It was her responsibility to keep that dog up while it was in heat. She failed to do that & it is HER FAULT. You owe her nothing, but if you wanted you could get pick of the litter. Stud fee if the price of a pup or a pup. So she owes you.

Don't worry there is nothing she can do. If she was smart she would get the dogs spayed & abort the litter. If her dog is so classy she shouldn't have let it roam while in heat. Her fault & she can do a damn thing about it. She has two options, one spay/abort or raise the pups & find homes for them all. one is yours or the money equivalent to one pup.

She can't make you do anything, you are NOT responsible for her dog getting pregnant.

Jo:
Hell no. If her dog was a "show champion" then they would be well trained and not be getting out like crazy! Your lying neighbor is in violation of the leash law and you are NOT liable for sh*t! She's blowing smoke up your @ss because she is too damn immature to accept responsibility for being a shitty dog owner and not keeping her mutt under her control as the leash law dictates! Next time her mutt gets into YOUR YARD take a picture of it and call animal control reporting the money hungry b*tch and they will deal with her and cite her butt for not being able to keep her mongrel contained.

YOu need to tell her she needs to grow up and do something that is foreign to her, such as maintaining her fence and train her so-called show champion mongrel and from now on if her mutt gets into YOUR yard, you're taking a picture of her mutt trespassing and reporting her to animal control since she is breaking the law so she can't get a red cent out of you. You don't reward law breakers.

Daniel:
It's your property, he is lucky that dog hasn't been reported or shot down by someone.
He can't do anything at all, let him rant and do as many lawsuits as he wishes, he won't win crap.

He was the one who failed to contain his mutt, and is the one responsible for anything that happens to it.
In certain states, you are even entittled to shoot this mutt if you want, as it's invading your property without your permission.

If you are feeling like it, you can even sue him for any damages (Scratches, bites or even fleas) his mutt caused to your dog.

Lastly, that isn't a "champion show dog", it's just a backyard bred mutt who the owner is making look like a show dog in order to scam you.

Linda:
Anyone having a dog that has not been fixed is responsible. Both male and female. Dogs have fewer medical problems, are happier and more content, easier to train and make a better pet when they are not able to reproduce.

To many animals don't have homes or are abused. Why make more. Both parties need to take responsibility for not keeping their dog within their home boundaries.

Do you know where your dog is? Are they home, safe, happy, warm, fed and loved? Are you a good, kind and responsible owner? If not, don't have a pet.

Patience:
I agree with everything said before - it would seem that the owner of the female dog is culpable since she was unable to keep her dog contained.

However, my question is why neither of you have your dogs fixed?? Your neighbor may have a half-*ssed excuse since her dog is supposedly a "show dog", but you admit that your male dog is a sweet mutt.

Why is he an INTACT sweet mutt?? As a sweet mutt, he's not going to be in high demand as a stud, so keeping him intact makes ZERO sense!!

Please - not just to prevent future fertility mishaps like the one you're currently experiencing, for the SAFETY of your dog - consider getting him neutered.

Humane societies and vet clinics will often have discounts to help cover the cost if that's an issue.

It's simply part of responsible dog ownership and is really for his benefit. And, really, do you want to get into this situation again ;)??

Sophie:
You are always supposed to be with your dog and your dog is supposed to be neutered, and when you're with your dog it should be on a leash so pregnancy matters won't occur.

It won't matter who was in whose yard. So you can blame yourself for not getting your pet neutered and for multitasking.

There is a problem because her dog is a quality bred poodle. So while she can't now be in contests till all this is over well she may be losing money.

But, will you be buying the mutt mix from her? You're right in that you can't be held responsible for their dog getting out but the problem of pregnancy transends the former problem.

I'd say the judge would rule in her favor. But that's only "my" opinion.
