My ex-boyfriend dumped his dog on me and left.?

Ask: I don't know where the dog actually came from but I think he purchased it from one of hid friends. He's not answering any of my phone calls or text messages about the dog. If I take it to the shelter can I somehow be charged with anything if he comes back? The dogs been staying at my house for about two months now, and I work to much to actually care for him properly. Like can he sue me for taking the dog there?
I don't no what I should do?

Answer:
Anonymous: You should consult local animal control or an attorney about pet abandonment laws in your area. In many places, you will need to serve your ex written notice to retrieve his property and allow a set amount of time to elapse before you can dispose of the dogs by surrendering to a shelter.

You will need to sign a document certifying you own the dogs to surrender to a shelter or rescue. If you've not followed appropriate procedures regarding abandoned property, signing that document would be fraudulent and could give your ex grounds to pursue you legally. Laws do vary significantly from place to place, so please consult someone who is familiar with the process in your local area.

Mystic: If you're too busy to properly care for it, how have you been taking care of it for 2 months? I would call the police/animal control and find out the proper legal steps. Explain you've contacted him multiple times BUT he has not returned your calls/messages. Let them know you'd rather not obtain full custody of the dog and ask what you can do about it.

They can likely leave a legal notice on his door about it. He will likely have a certain amount of time to come and claim the dog. If he doesn't, then you can likely have someone else take it or drop it off at a shelter.

He may also be able to face charges for dumping the dog on you. If you didn't say hey drop the dog off and I will care for it, then he technically illegally dumped/abanonded it on you. So check into that and see if he can face charges if he doesn't pick it back up.

Knight: Oh well, s*** happens. Should have told him immediately that you're going to turn it into the pound if he doesn't take it.

It's unfortunate for the dogs sake that the innocent dog should suffer due to his negligence. At least your rid of the BF as this relationship was doomed to failure.

Send one final message and keep a copy that if he doesn't pick up the dog, within five days you will re-home and/or turn dog into a shelter/rescue, and then do it.

There's nothing he can do to you after that, he abandoned the dog, he may try to sue, but he will lose.

Hopefully you kept all the receipts pertaining to the care of this dog for the entire two months+, then you can counter sue him and recover this amount.

StarOfDarkness: How do you knwo the odg is dumped? You have no right to get rid of the dog since its not yours.

You HAVE to give him a notice to pick the dog up with in a reasonable amount of time and keep a copy of it. If he refuses to pick the dog up then you tkae the dog to a shelter or a rescue.

You also have to find out the legal amount of time that has to pass for the aniaml to be declared abandoned. You can't do anything at all like sell the dog, give the dog away or take it to a shelter until you've sent him a notice and allowed the legal time to pass.

Jo: You need to find out what the law is in your city/state as to how long it takes for property to be considered abandoned which a dog is by law, a piece of property.

If you've had him longer than that, they he's abandoned the dog and you are within your rights to do what you want to with the dog. If he comes back and suddenly wants his dog tell him tough sh*t then he should have responded to your calls and texts but since he abandoned his mutt, he's SOL and to suck it up.

Acelious: there is no way to properly answer this question other than to suggest you need to look into the laws in your area.

in my area, if the dog was left with you without an agreement in place for you to provide for the dog & then the owner (regardless of bf or not) made no attempt at contact to get their dog for 90 days, then it defaults to being your dog because 90 days is required for abondonment

Daniels: It's not yours, it's his. His papers say he is his owner, not yours.
You have absolutely nothing to do with this dog, surrender it to the shelter, or if you can't be bothered to take it, ask animal control to take it instead.
He can't do anything about it, as he practically abandoned his dog.
