How do I handle my friend hating the puppy I got her?

Ask: My best friend has been begging for a puppy for over 6 months so I got her one for Christmas. I lied to her and said we were going to pick something else up but she was actually riding with me to pick out her puppy.

When she found out, she was so excited, but now she will hardly look at him, refuses to name him, and is mad he likes me more than her.

She also thinks he should be potty trained at 6 weeks old. How should I go about talking to her about this?
Thank you in advance!

Khan:
Your friend lacks the maturity to own a live pet. Rehome the puppy. It's the thought that counts, but this is exactly why you don't gift living animals.

If your friend can't even handle that her puppy likes to play with you more because you aren't always mad at it for completely irrational, unrealistic reasons, she certainly cannot properly care for it let alone train it.

Jo:
Your "friend" clearly isn't mature enough to have a pet or else she'd know that they don't come house trained but also the problem is that you aren't legally able to buy a pup until they are at the VERY LEAST 8 weeks old!
Offer to take the little guy off her hands and tell her that when she's mature enough you will take her to the shelter and get her an ADULT dog so she won't pout like a spoiled, overly entitled brat like she is now. That is if you want to keep somebody like that as a friend. To me she not good enough to be your friend.

Edith:

You have a dog. Take the responsibility for it and get an agreement with your friend that she understands that you own the dog and not her.

She will probably be happy to give up the responsibility. You might offer your friend something else that is not alive and that she would rather have, as a different present. You should also expect your friend to eventually regret her decision, but that is a problem for the future.

LakeLady:
You need to take that puppy back. It's illegal to transfer a puppy before 8 weeks of age. Those last two weeks with litter and mom are CRUCIAL to the puppy's development.

Nobby:
Why would a grown adult beg your for 6 months instead of just buying one herself? You both need to grow the hell up. Its a live animal, not a toy. Take the dog back and either return it to the breeder or rehome it.

Paul:
then your friend is not ready for a pup . rehome this pup now ....do what is right for the pup
