My cats collar tighten up around is neck, should I get him a new one? Please answer?

Ask: I like my cat to wear a collar, I get the snap and release collars so my cat doesn't hang himself. I got him a cheap one at walmart, the thread looked like crap after like a week of him wearing it, and when I put the collar on him it was very lose around his neck.

Today he was on my lap, and my mom said "His collar is pretty tight" I noticed she was right and took it off him right away, it was so tightened up I dunno how it went around his neck! It doesn't even look anything like how it did when I bought it! It could have straggled him! And he's been wearing this for weeks. Now after Christmas I am going to find everything I know about the company that makes these collars and send a nasty email and make a few phone calls freaking out.

I bought my cat a brand new collar for Christmas before I even knew about the one he had on, this one is from pet value, costed more money, should I put it on him? I'm so scared now! Help!

Anonymous: Make sure the collar isn't too tight but snug and quite loose to make this problem unlikely to occur again. Also it's usually the fur that is the problem but I'm not sure if your cat has lots of fur or not. If he does try pushing the fur in opposite directions so that the collar is close to the skin and then tighten it a little if it's an adjustable collar.

Do this so that the fur can't get under the collar again but don't make it too tight so that it's uncomfortable. It should help but if he's a scratcher (scratches his neck a lot) then I would recommend an adjustable collar.

If you use an adjustable collar it would be best because you can always make sure it's not too tight or too loose but just right. I hope this helps :) and remember if his present doesn't suit him well, you can always return. At least I hope so...

Elaine M: Either he's growing, or you didn't check the SIZE when you put it on him. They come in different lengths. You should not have a 'tight' collar on him.
