My dog ate onions....what now?

Ask: I diced some white onion for a sandwich, put it on the roll and dropped it to the ground. My 70lb lab snatched it up and scarfed it down. I'm very worried now and cannot get her to a vet as my bf has the car at work. Not very many onions but still...super worried

Answer:
Verulam: As with anything said to be toxic for a dog, although some might have a more immediate reaction, it's usually the result of eating what they shouldn't be eating over a significant period of time, so the toxins build up in the system, that does the harm.

I['d not suggest for one moment, that it's necessary to induce vomiting in this case - but phone your vet and take their advice.

And don't let him get into onions again!!

Karen: No vet needed. There is no reason why the dog should not be okay. Onions are not the best thing, but I'd guess that just about every dog in the world has had some at some time. It's a large dog and a small amount of onion. Maybe there'll be some loose stools tomorrow. Maybe not.

Millie: A Lab, being a large dog, won't be effected by that much onion. He would need to eat a LOT more in order for it to cause harm. Worst case scenario, he may feel a little sick. So just let him outside and if he feels nauseous, he'll munch on some grass to cause himself to throw up the contents in his tummy. There is nothing to worry about, dogs are accidentally fed onion all the time in dinner scraps and it is rare the dogs to be harmed by this.

Ramel: here are many kinds of food that humans eat which are unsafe for dogs. Onions are not an exception. Feeding your pooch onions can make him seriously ill, whether they are raw, cooked, or in powdered form. Onions are toxic to canines because of the substance they contain known as sulfate.

Rossie: What tigrillen said. A small amount of onion, especially with a dog the size of your dog, is okay. You don't want to feed it to your dog, but if accidently get a small amount now and then, it won't hurt. But, do try to be more careful in the future.

Bayman: Some dogs can't digest onions. My dog Tyson ate some meatloaf and he had to get a blood transfusion because of it. Watch your dog and make sure hes acting normal and if his mood, temperament or movements change dramatically, PLEASE call the vet. We almost lost our dog
