Should my 8-week old German Shepherd wear a sweater outside in 30 degree temps in NY ?

Answer

Verulam:
No. Provided he's not left standing around outside and it's now blowing a hoolie out there, he should be able to cope with that temperature which is only just under freezing after all.

The more we put a coat on a dog, the more we'll stop the natural growth of what nature provides. We've confused things enough with our central heating and air conditioning as it is.

My Whippet has coats, my Bassets never have, even when living out in Canada!

ps It's not about looking cute - also we can shed lawyers when we feel too hot, our dogs can't.

Twin:
For the short amount of time she is outside, 10-20 minutes, she should be okay without a sweater. There is no reason to have a puppy outside for longer than that at this age. Besides which, you'll be getting chilled too by then.

Eliza:
No. Dog's should never wear sweaters especially ones with long fur/double coats like your dog has. Dogs actually suffer more from problems with overheating than they do from becoming too cold. If you're worried about your dogs temperature, speak to your vet.

Otherwise, I would just keep the walks brief (10-15mins at a time). At 8 weeks, your puppy really should be by his mother at all times and not be going on walks.

Lakelady:

No, they're double coated and don't need a sweater. In fact it will crush out the insulative properties of his own fur.

Lorraine:

NO... an 8 week old should only ever go out in your own land for house training anyway and they need to develop the coat to deal with it.

Mr.Tims:
8 weeks is very, very young i don't think he should be going outside yet.

Jen:
No. Your dog will be fine if outside long enough to exercise and potty.
