Our cat has been to the vet several times, and the vet suggested laxaton for his issues. We have switched to wet cat food for a long time now and he isn't plugged up all the time. Its just that when he doesn't poop for a day is what freaks us out.

We lax him enough so that he can have aid in his pooping but sometimes the lax doesn't always work. That is why I'm asking about other substitutes for laxatone that can aid him in pooping. So I'm not a bad pet owner because we did take him to the vet and they suggested laxaton but again it doesn't seem to help him much.

Our big fat beast of a cat has been struggling to do her serious business for the last 2 years. We were very close to having the vet perform an expensive and somewhat risky operation. Since then we've been using lactulose and bran fiber with mixed results. Our new vet recommended Royal Canin Vet Diet Gastro Fiber. I was nervous that a) it might constipate her even more or b) all hell would break loose. Thankfully, neither happened. Our suddenly happy cat moves with renewed vigor all because she has beautiful bowel movements with stunning regularity. This stuff is amazing!

constipation is a dryness issue. you need to increase his fluid intake. canned food with added water or broth. if constipation goes on long enough it becomes obstipation. obstipated cats often need sedation and manual extraction of feces. don't wait too long. more than 4 days and the cats can get into trouble. chronic obstipation is caused by or leads to a condition called mega colon in which the colon nerve supply is damaged. worst case scenario these cats need colonectomy.

i've had great success with a new veteriary diet called royal canin GI fiber response. cat patients that were on max lactulose, propulcid, and tegaserod and still obstipating have gone normal. worth asking your vet about.

It is so easy. Addy psyllium fiber to your cats wet food. Others suggest pumpkin, which is a great fiber, but most cats don't like it.

I am presently dealing with a foster cat with a megacolon because he wouldn't eat and developed chronic counstipation. I am also supplementing lactose.

but right now (as a foster parent on a low budget) I have a great suggestion.. Add the psyllium fiber and give wet foods with additional fiber.

Try some tuna or other fish packed in oil. You can also mix some vegetable oil in with some wet cat food too. The oil will help make things slick. He could also be dehydrated, so put out plenty of small water bowls that have fresh water in them.

My kitten was very constipated when we first adopted her, and the pumpkin thing didn't really help her. I gave her some wet food mixed with vegetable oil, and put out more small water dishes and after a week she was fine.

ok this has not been suggested by a vet....but this is what I did.. I gave my cat tuna fish in oil from the can a lot like 2 a day and it made his constipation issues go away.

Ocimom:
Nothing. Please take the cat to your vet for treatment. If you are feeding dry food, stop now and switch to canned food. Too much dry can cause lots of problems including overweight, liver/kidney problems and UTI's

Kathy:
He might need more fluids, so something like chicken or beef broth might get him to drink more. More wet catfoods and less dry catfood.
