dog foaming at the mouth

Why is my dog foaming at the mouth?

He threw up earlier today and then recently started foaming at the mouth. He has thrown up before, but never started foaming at the mouth.

Update: Thank you everyone for your concern. He does have all his shots so it wouldn't be rabies. We did take him to a vet and it turns out he has digestive issues and also has an infection. He should get over it very soon though!

so many reasons why your dog foaming at mouth, maybe rabies, Upset Stomach is another reason a dog may foam at the mouth is because he has eaten something that tastes really bad. When there is a nasty taste in his mouth, the dog will spit, pant and do lots of other things to try to get that revolting taste out. If he becomes distressed, it will only worsen the salivation and the foaming. if your not sure what's the reason better yet check with your vet.

If there is a possibility that your dog could have been bitten by a rabid bat, skunk, raccoon, coyote or any other wild life, I could be rabies. but with out a pic to see what kind of foam you are seeing, no one can tell. There would be some weird behavior, aggressive, jerky movements, shys from the light........

If a dog licks a frog, they start foaming at the mouth cause of a substance on the frogs skin to keep off predators.

If you dog is showing the symptoms of rabies, back off & leave the dog alone, Call Animal Control & wait.

You be the judge.

Doggies can also exhibit this behavior because they are not eating properly. For instance my 1 year old likes to hunger strike trying to hold out for human food. Eventually she will vomit foam (stomach bile). High energy dogs are especially prone to vomiting and foaming at the mouth if they are hungry because they metabolize food more quickly than other breeds. It could be something serious (more symptoms and signs in that case and it will be acute) but for my pup it was just her being stubborn about her dog food sometimes. Hope that helps.

I had a dog that kept close by as I was working on plumbing in the house. Floorboards up, screwdriver used and a bar of soap to help the screws go in. Reached out for the soap again. It wasnt there. Got another bar. Used it. Put it down. Went to use it again but it wasnt there. Then I saw bubbles coming out of the dogs mouth!

Yup! She'd eaten both bars of soap! Soap is made with tallow and animal fat. The latter got her eating it! She was literally foaming at the mouth but it was the soap bars. I hope its nothing worse than that for your dog.

My dogs do this after they've been trying to catch and eat frogs. The frogs give off something that make my dogs foam at the mouth. Every now and then, my dog will manage to eat one and it makes him sick. But I still take them to the vet every time, so you should to.
