Putting my/my grandmas dog down soon? Help to cope?

My grandmas dog is 16 years old. He is at his last stage of life we believe.

He hasn't had a very good life with her and I've been the only one to walk with him and play with him the last 4 years(I got old enough to understand he was being neglected) and I've really bonded with this dog.

But he is fading away slowly and we've decided that in the next few months, he is getting put down. I am planning to give him the best day of his life.

1. What are some fun things we can do with an old dog? So far we plan to take him for walks and explore land he has never seen, let him play with my dog(they are friends), give him lots of good treats and food. Other things in mind? He doesn't like fetch or games
2. How can I cope when the day comes? :(

It sounds like you are a very compassionate person. I think the things you have planned for your dog sound absolutely perfect.

The only thing I'd add is to give him lots of love, cuddles, and talk to him. Please be sure it is his time to go before making that decision.

One thing that you can do to cope, is to remember that you loved this dog so much that you gave him the best, last years of his life. And always remember - all dogs really do go to heaven.

1. All a dog really wants is love, food, and fun.

2. You can cope by feeling what you feel, but also not making it worse or more dramatic than it is. I see kids on here acting like the world is over and I think they are over-dramatizing.

Aww, I'm sorry that your friend is coming to the end of his life. It's nice that you will be there for him.

Though it is tempting to give him all kinds of treats, please be careful as these will upset his system and make him feel horrible.

So give him things that will be tasty but not irritating to his stomach. Scrambled eggs with cheese (no butter/oils), boiled chicken breast with rice, bake a sweet potato in the microwave & scoop out the inside & mash up - they love that, yogurt, a little vanilla ice cream and some peanut butter. Give him lots of belly rubs and play in the grass with him.

Take pictures of him, you'll want them for later. Hugs to you.

There's no coping with death it hits you like a train and you just have to suffer until the pain stops.
