I do not know too much of his background.
He is always chirpy to see me and sleep with me but picking him up is always an issue.
I also do not appreciate his biting and growling when I try to pick him up. He also won't come to me.
What gives? He hates me. I feel like a bad person.
Please help.
Update:
Perhaps I handle him roughly.
Maybe he knows I'm anxious.
What do I do?!

Answer
Amber:
I don't pick my dog up. She snaps at me if I try. I know I need to work on it; trips to the vet are a pain.
Basically; just don't pick him up!
Take him for walks. Praise him. Play with him. Feed him. Lay on the floor with him. Call him to you when you have a treat for him and give him it only if he listens. The things like that are what gain a dog's trust like this.

Have
you ever stopped to think picking him up may be painful? Maybe he has
injured ribs. Or the former owners may have picked him up every time
they did something cruel to him.
