How can I wait for 9 years for a cat?

Ask: Hi, my mom doesn't want a cat, but I really do. There is no way to change her mind, so don't tell me to try harder. I'll need to wait until I move out to get one, which will most likely be in 6 to 9 years. How can I wait for such a long time to get a cat, or get over wanting one?

Answer:
CW: Why don't you learn a lot about cats then "cat sit" (not baby sit) for cats that will be left at home while its owner is gone? You can make some money, but make sure you don't invite your friends or family over to the home where the cat lives ... that is inviting HUGE trouble for you. See how it works out! If I had a cat-sitter for my cat, I would be so appreciative to get the same person every time, as I'm sure the cat would! Maybe a veterinarian could recommend you if you explained what you had learned about cats, and that you were a responsible and loving animal lover (especially cats)! Best wishes to you! (You can look up how to take care of cats on line, too! But ask yourself if you think the authors of the article are knowledgeable and does what they say sound reasonable.)

If the cat's owner(s) have security cameras, they can be a great reference for you when the owners get home!!

Jack: That's all part of becoming an adult - my mom used to drive me crazy saying "if it's not worth waiting for it's not worth having" and while we don't like hearing stuff like this, it is to a large degree true. You can't control what your mom will and will not allow. But depending on your age, perhaps she will allow you to volunteer at a shelter where you can help to socialize the cats? Usually you need to be 16 though, although you can call your local shelters and see what their requirements are. And most schools have a community service requirement - this satisfies that (as well as your need to have cats in your life).

Katana: I know exactly how you feel with this issue. My parents don't want me having a pet either (they say that the only pet they'd even consider getting is a certain breed of dog, and I want a bunny...) So yeah, I get it, the waiting is tough. But don't worry, things will work out. Maybe you could go to a friend's house who possibly has a cat, or you could volunteer at a shelter if you meet their specific age requirement, and also do your research on cats. Hope this helps! :)
