I
have a 4 year old border collie and when I leave him he barks like mad
and I don't know how to stop him and when I walk back to the car he
stops. What do I need to do to stop him barking when I leave him for 5
minutes?
Update 1:
He only barks when he is left in the car
Update 2:
Without using muzzles or barking collars
Answer
ChaCha:
There are a certain kind of dog whistle that you can use. It can't be
heard from the human ear, but dogs can hear it. Lots of people use
these for noisy neighbor dog barking. It's perfectly harmless to the
animal. Do a Pavlov type of thing... whistle each time he barks...
he'll soon learn the correlation and stop. Negative reinforcement.
Nobby:
Muzzles should not be so tight that the dog cant open its mouth.
Not all bark collars give an electric shock. The citronella collar gives off a whiff of lemon scent and its very effective.
If you dont want to do that, see a trainer and work on desensitising him to you walking away from the car,. You would practice it at home with the car doors open. Its too much to type here..

Teach
your dog the "quiet" command & give him a treat when he does if he
gets out of hand they sell a device for cheap on ebay , is a collar and
it would annoy him everytime he starts barking and that way he stops
from doing so , you can remove it when home and put it on when you leave
in case you live in apartment so you wont bother neighbors!
