Why do male dogs lift their legs to urinate?

Answer

Charles:
Male dogs lift their legs to urinate, because of the stream of urine will not soil their legs or paws. So they can aim high and cover urine with their own scent. Their anatomy makes it necessary to raise the leg, rather than to pee on his chin. Also, dogs will mark territory with urine, and they like to aim high.

2: So they can aim high and cover another male dogs urine with their own scent.

The more Dominant natured a male dog is, the more often he will mark territory and aim urine on something as high as he can to announce his presence in the area.

Well I think my male dog is retarded or something because he's never raised his leg up to pee. Could be possibly due to him just turning a year old, and he's fixed and not dominant. He just squats into the grass like my female does.
