She's been on flea medicine since we got her (maybe that's it?) but I know it might be because of fleas. She has some scratches from itching so much and some scabby areas. I'm really not sure what to do. If it persists I will take her to the vet or maybe even a shelter but I'd like to know if there is anything alternative like a spray/cream/powder/etc I could use to help her. Tried giving her an oatmeal bath and it did help some. Thanks for any help, I really want to help my cat.

It sounds like fleas, but you say you have her on flea medication. Is it a spray/shampoo or something that actually kills fleas in all life stages, like Advantage? If its the first then you need to use a more effective flea killing product like Advantage or Frontline. Flea sprays/shampoos only kill adult fleas, they do nothing about flea eggs, or fleas in your carpeting/fabrics. You will also need to treat for fleas in your home, which involves vacuuming and then throwing the bag away immediately, as well as spraying with a product like Siphotrol. Fleas are very hard to get rid of once they are in your home, and you will need to put in quite abit of work.
Once you have done everything to kill the fleas, and if your cat isnt better, then its likely a food allergy. You can correct this by using a different food, I recommend a vet brand that uses non-traditional meats (eg. duck, turkey etc).
I hoe this helps. It really does sound like fleas to me.
