What is the most common dog breed at shelters?

Ask: What is the most common dog breed at shelters?
And what is the most uncommon?
Note that mutts don't count.

Answer

Karen:
Where I am, it seems to be about 75% pit bull and pit bull mixes. No idea what might be least common among the 125 breeds I have not yet seen represented at local shelters.

Pamela:

In our local shelter the pit bulls and pit bull mixes over cast any other breed or mix of dog.
GSD mixes are popular dogs people want to adopt though.

Katie:
At the shelter where I volunteer (Ireland) the most common would be:
- Collies (Lab x collie and husky x collie are very common).
- Husky's.
- Bull breeds.
- Jack Russel's and terrier crosses.
The most uncommon.. That's hard to say, but i've never come across any poodles or chow chows for example!

Kittie:
Common:
Pitbull mixes and Chihuahuas
Uncommon: Retrievers, Poodles and Yorkies.

I live in Northern California and there are a crap ton of Pits and Chihuahuas because there are so many careless owners and BYBers.
