Is it okay for dogs to wear sweaters?

Ask: My mom bought my dog a Christmas sweater. It would make her happy if she saw him wearing it, but I thought it was bad to make dogs wear sweaters. Would it be okay for him to wear it for just a little while? I really don't want to, but my mom has been asking me to put the dogs sweater on. What should I do?

Kayla:
It's should be fine, but some dogs might try to chew it off, or bite at it at first. Maybe give some treats after you put it on him to make him associate it with food? Then he might enjoy it better. Just make sure he doesn't get too hot. Oh, and make sure it's a sweater made for dogs, not a human sweater lol.

Hearth Of Gold:
Put the dogs sweater on but don't leave the dog alone in it. They can chew up the clothes or worse, get all trusted up in it and choke. I have a small dog that needs to wear clothes in the winter because her fur is so fine. I am very careful to check her a lot as she has pulled a leg through the neck and gotten things twisted and around a couple of times.

Not to me!! I don't do dressing up for dogs, much as my Whippet has 3 coats, one an unlined mack for wet warm days, a quilted one for dry winter days and a fleece lined mack for the worst of Winter.

Many dogs hate wearing clothes while others don't mind. What I would say is dogs should be able to be left to grow a thicker natural coat for Winter which may not happen if the dog is forced to wear a coat. We've done enough to confuse the natural growth with our central heating and air conditioning without putting coats/sweaters on dogs who basically don't need one.

Some dogs love clothes, some don't. If they have short fur, are small, old/very young, and you live in a cold/wet area, then he might like it. I have a 13 year old Great Pyreenese. Imagine a small polorbear mixed with a sheep, with floppy ears. He is massive; head up to my hip.

He needed to be shaved when he was younger for some surgery; and he needed to wear a coat. For the past 7 years he has adored being shaved (if he sees the clippers; he runs over and pesters people. Even men trying to shave/trim their beard.) sadly it's bad for him, so we can't really do that.

But he ALSO loves his clothes; and we have a pretty large asortment of very light-weight clothes, most of which i've made myself because he's just too big! He goes and pulls out his hamper of clothes, grabs one (or five) and brings them over to rub against people untill you put them on him.

Frankly, i figure it it makes him so happy; why not do it for him? He dosen't like to play games, he dosen't like to run around after toys, he dosen't like to do much more than carting. So if he gets so happy over it, why not let him be happy?
